Skin of their teeth

The National League’s East Division was the embodiment of mediocrity in 1973. All six teams hovered around the .500 mark as August came to a close. The St. Louis Cardinals held the lead with a 68-66 record, followed by the Pittsburgh Pirates at 65-65. Nobody seemed worthy of the divisional title.

The Cardinals went into a tailspin in September, as did three other participants in this slow-motion pennant race. Only the Montreal Expos (16-13) and New York Mets (20-8) came to life during the final month. The Mets, who had been 12 games below .500 as recently as August 26, finally emerged as the NL East champions with the unimpressive record of 82-79.

New York’s prospects in the National League Championship Series were bleak. The Mets were facing the powerful Cincinnati Reds (99-63), soon to gain everlasting fame as the Big Red Machine. But stellar pitching by Jon Matlack, Jerry Koosman, and Tom Seaver quieted the bats of the mighty Reds, who scored just eight runs in five games. The Mets, with a team score of 57.307, became the most unlikely winner of a league title in the Modern Era, which dates back to 1961.

New York fought valiantly in the World Series, extending the Oakland Athletics to seven games before losing. That was a common fate for teams on the following list of the era’s 10 lowest-rated league champs, which are ranked in reverse order of their team scores. Only the 1987 Minnesota Twins and 2006 Cardinals went on to win world championships, but the 1973 Mets and three others (the 2014 Kansas City Royals, 1997 Cleveland Indians, and 2001 New York Yankees) battled all the way to a seventh game in the World Series.
